First Year Live On Requirement – Benefits

Location Benefits

Living in a residence has a number of benefits, both direct and indirect, that assists you with your transition to college life and being a member of the Georgia Southern University community. Living on campus means that you are automatically a part of a vibrant, active, and informed community. When you live on campus, it is easier to get involved with student organizations, know about programs and events on campus, and use the academic and personal resources on campus for students like the Recreation and Activity Center (RAC), the Academic Success Center and the Library.

Each floor or floor section of a residence hall has a Community Leader or CL. The CL is an upper class student who lives on the floor and acts as a resource for other residents, but also helps develop the community among the students who live in that part of the hall. CLs also provide support through our CARL Conversations, social programming, and regular interactions with residents.

Living on campus also provides a great deal of convenience. You do not have to worry about getting up early enough to find a parking spot…you can walk, bike, or ride the bus to class. You are close to campus dining options, classes, and entertainment options.

National research has shown that there are a number of benefits for freshmen living on campus:

  • More contact with faculty members and other students
  • More involvement with student organizations and the campus community
  • Higher retention from your first to second year
  • Higher grades and more credit hours per semester
  • Meeting people with different backgrounds and histories
  • Improved confidence and willingness to express themselves in a positive manner.

Georgia Southern also offers a large number of spaces in our high demand style of housing which can include private bedrooms, full kitchens, and even individual apartment units with washer/dryer units in the room.
