Return Address

A return address tells the USPS where the sender wants the mail returned if it is undeliverable. A return address is required on certain types of mail. For mail prepared as upgradeable mail the return address must not be in the *OCR (optical character reading) read area. Mail qualifying for Nonprofit Standard Mail rates must have the name and return address of the authorized nonprofit organization either on the outside of the mailpiece or in a prominent location on the material being mailed (inside the mailpiece).

Guidelines:

  • Use simple sans serif type with uniform stroke thickness.
  • Type or machine-print in dark ink on a light background with a uniform left margin.
  • Use uppercase characters throughout the address.
  • Left-justify every line in the address clock.
  • Use two-letter state abbreviations.
  • Use one space between city and state, two spaces between state and Zip+4 code.
  • Use appropriate Zip+4 code (if unknown, use 5-digit Zip Code).

Zip Codes

When receiving or sending out mail, including packages and flat mail, it is imperative that you use the proper Zip code in the Address destination and/or the return address. Georgia Southern University has its own unique Zip code (30460).

For example:

STUDENTS FULL NAME
GEORGIA SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY
PO BOX XXXXX
STATESBORO GA 30460

This means that 30460 is recognized throughout the US as Georgia Southern University only. There are 4 zip codes that can be used when mailing in or around the Statesboro area. They are as follows:

  • 30458  Statesboro area
  • 30461  rural addresses in the Outlining Statesboro area
  • 30459  PO Boxes at the Main Branch USPS in Statesboro
  • 30460  Any address at Georgia Southern University

Only use 30460 when mailing to the GSU campus or as a return address when mailing off campus to a destination.

If you are not sure of what a correct Zip code is, please feel free to contact Printing and Postal Services at (912) 478-6245 for the correct Zip code.

Foreign Addresses

Mail addressed to countries outside of the United States must have the address typed or printed in Roman capital letters and Arabic numerals. The complete address must include the name of addressee, house number, street address or box number, city, province, and country. All non-English addresses must be interlined with an English translation of the destination, post
office, province, and country.

Computerized Address Labels

Departments mailing 200 or more pieces and using computerized address labels must request them from the supplier in zip code order. This will speed the delivery process and also qualify the department for postage discounts. The only exception to this procedure is for intracampus mailers, who request their address labels in box number order.

Envelopes/Cards

Envelopes and cards smaller than 3-1/2 ” high by 5″ long will not be accepted by the U.S. Postal Service. Any envelope or cards smaller than the minimum acceptable size will not be accepted.

Parcels

Use a corrugated carton. Choose one in good rigid condition with all the flaps intact. Remove ALL old addresses from the carton and pack the contents with plenty of cushioning. Address information should be clearly printed or typed on an address label and placed in the center of the box. Use a filament-reinforced tape to seal and reinforce your package (scotch tape and masking tape are not acceptable). Avoid twine and cord as they tend to get caught in mail processing equipment. Also, avoid using wrapping paper on the outside of your package.
