Message from the Director

Greetings Candidates,

The Residence Education team, within Georgia Southern’s University Housing program, is excited about your interest in our open professional staff positions. As a team of 17 professionals, we are dedicated to serving our students. We strive to be progressive in our approach to residence education and thoughtful in how we do our work. We are members of a large Housing department with 150+ full time staff members. I’m pleased to share with you that our Residential Facilities and Business Administration staff truly do support the Residence Education team’s efforts to develop communities and assist students in their growth and development. We are one team.

The Residence Education team has spent several years examining the “how” and “why” we do our work. One of our major projects has been to align and map our human resource processes (hiring, training and evaluation) to identified skills & competencies. Our biggest cultural shift has been to implement a “residential curriculum,” which we’ve successfully done over the last 3.5 years. Through this process we have selected two pillars of focus for all of our educational efforts: community development and student success. Additionally we’ve established six learning outcomes which you can read about here. Our professional staff members are educators. Thus they participate in designing a hall curriculum and assessing educational efforts within four of the learning outcomes. We’ve also embedded teaching within the Resident Director position (you will teach FYE 1220 and LEAD 3900) through our strong partnerships with the First Year Experience office and the Leadership and Community Engagement office. These three exciting examples are ones that you, as a potential new staff member, can contribute to and learn from.
Should you be invited to campus, we will make every effort to make you feel at home.   My hope is that you will give us a thorough “look,” and hopefully see a place for yourself on our team.
