Preparing to Leave: All students must complete the Resident Closing Checklist prior to leaving for Winter Break. Individuals returning for Spring 2024 do not need to check out of their space.  The following items must be completed before your departure.

  • Remove any items that may spoil in their fridge/freezer, cabinets/drawers, and countertops.
  • Empty all trash cans and receptacles. Remove all trash bags, pick up trash on the floor, etc., from the space, and properly dispose of them in the dumpsters.
  • Wipe down all countertops and surfaces. Clean all toilets and showers.
  • Vacuum/sweep/mop all floors. Remove any loose items from the floor.
  • All large appliances (fridges, stoves/ovens, washers, dryers, microwaves, and dishwashers) should remain plugged in. All other appliances and electronics should be unplugged.
  • Windows should be closed and locked. Blinds should be closed. If you live on the first floor, ensure the window stick is inserted or work order is placed for missing window sticks.
  • HVAC units should be set to AUTO, HEAT at 60 degrees (SBO) or 70 degrees (SAV).
  • Turn off all lights.
  • Close and lock the bedroom and main doors.
  • Submit a Work Order
  • If you have an open bed in your shared space, that side of the room needs to be COMPLETELY empty and move-in ready for a new resident before you leave.
Not Returning for Spring 2024

Preparing to Check Out: All students must check out of their individual space if they are NOT returning for Spring 2024. The following items must be completed before your departure. Be sure to remove all your personal belongings from the space.

  • Lock your windows, and insert your window stick if one is provided (first-floor residents).
  • Lower and close window blinds.
  • Remove all trash and perishable food items and take to the appropriate dumpster. If trash or perishable food is found in your room, you will be charged for its removal.
  • Remove all items and clean the refrigerator and freezer.
  • Empty and clean the green recycling bin (if applicable)
  • Set the room temperature to AUTO, HEAT at 60 degrees (SBO) or 70 degrees (SAV). It is important to have the unit set to AUTO to allow for proper air circulation.
  • Check every drawer/closet and take home all belongings
  • Turn off all lights.
  • Close and lock the bedroom and main doors.
  • Submit a Work Order
  • Check out with an RA or complete an express envelope.

During the Check Out Process: You will have the opportunity to inspect your room with an RA or through an express checkout. During that time, University Housing staff members will inspect the status of your space and will note any damage or cleaning issues. A University Housing staff member will collect your key at check out. If you are unable to turn in your key at check out, you may be charged with a lock change.

  • Even if damages and cleaning concerns are documented at check-out, all rooms are assessed through a final walkthrough once the building is vacant.
  • The Resident Director of your building will assign charges as a result of the room condition and final walkthrough. They will be taking into consideration any damages or concerns that were submitted at the beginning of the academic year. The charges will appear on your Wings account no later than December 15.
  • If you would like to appeal any charges placed on your account, email residentialeducation@georgiasouthern.edu. In that email, please include your name, Eagle ID, room assignment, the item(s) you are appealing, and your reason for appeal. You are able to appeal any charges until February 1.

Break Stay Sign-Up

Break Stay is only available to students currently living on campus for Fall 2023 and who will be living on campus for Spring 2024. The Break Stay form is submitted through the housing portal.  To access the housing portal, log into MyGeorgiaSouthern and select the On-Campus Housing link under the Campus Life tile.  Click on Housing Request Forms in the light blue ribbon and select Winter Break Stay Request Form.

In order to participate, students must be enrolled and living on campus for both Fall and Spring semesters at Georgia Southern University. You must sign up for Break Housing by Monday, December 11, 2023, at 5 pm to be eligible to participate.

If you are staying in the same bedroom assignment for Fall 2023 and Spring 2024, you may occupy your room for the entire break period (December 12 – January 5) and use your room. Staff will be in to clean the common areas (bathrooms, kitchen, etc.) if anyone has moved out of the space, so you are advised to keep as many belongings in your bedroom as possible. Students paying for Break Stay will have full access to their room while the campus is closed for Winter Break. There will be limited resources available throughout campus. Be aware that meal plans end on December 11 and will not be turned on until the beginning of the Spring semester. Cost – $500

If you are NOT returning for Spring 2024, you will not be approved for Winter Break Stay.

Break stay charges will be posted to your student account and must be paid with your Spring 2024 charges.

Once your request has been reviewed, you will receive an email either approving or denying your break stay request.  If you are not approved, you must check out of the halls prior to closing on December 12 at noon.  The Break Stay request form will be turned off on December 11.  If you need to remain on campus, please see your Resident Director or contact University Housing.
