Statesboro Campus – Break Closings & Housing

General Closing Information

Halls close on Friday, December 9th at 12:00 Noon.

You must depart for winter break within 24 hours after your last final exam or class of the Fall 2022 semester, or by Friday, December 9, at 12:00 PM — whichever comes first.

  • If you are participating in or assisting with Commencement, you may stay in the Residence Halls until 10:00 AM the day following your ceremony, pending approval from the Main Housing Office.  You must contact our office by email at  You will receive an email once our office has verified your participation in Commencement.
  • If you want to remain on campus during the Break Period – you must complete a Break Stay Application. More information can be found here.

Returning for Spring 2023 Semester: Students may leave their personal belongings in their space for their return to campus in January. We encourage all students to complete the following checklist before leaving for break:

  • Lock your windows, insert your window stick if one is provided (first-floor residents).
  • Remove all trash and perishable food items and take to the appropriate dumpster. If trash or perishable food is found in your room, you will be charged for its removal.
  • Lower and close window blinds.
  • Unplug all appliances except for the refrigerator and microwave.
  • Store any non-perishable food in closets or on shelves.
  • Remove any items from the floor, or store in a waterproof container.
  • Set the room temperature to AUTO, HEAT, and set at 60 degrees. It is important to have the unit set to AUTO to allow for proper air circulation.
  • Turn off all lights.
  • Close and lock the bedroom and main doors.
  • Submit a Work Order 

Not Returning for Spring 2023 Semester:

  • Students must move all of their personal items out of their room and turn in the room key at the front desk in your hall before the halls close.
  • During the check-out process, you will have the opportunity to inspect your room with an RA or through an express checkout. During that time, University Housing staff members will inspect the status of your space and will note any damage or cleaning issues.
  • Even if damages and cleaning concerns are documented at check-out, all rooms are assessed through a final walkthrough once the building is vacant.
  • The Resident Director of your building will assign charges as a result of the room condition and final walkthrough. They will be taking into consideration any damages or concerns that were submitted at the beginning of the academic year. The charges will appear on your Wings account no later than December 15th.
  • Please ensure that you have completed the Cancellation form on the Housing website.
Community Desk Hours 

Each community desk will be opened for extended hours starting on December 1th through December 8th. Each community desk will close for Winter Break starting on December 9th at 5 pm after the halls close. Community Desks will reopen on January 5th at 12 pm. 

  • Thursday, December 1 – Thursday, December 8: 8 AM to 10 PM 
  • Friday, December 9: 8 AM to 5 PM 
  • December 10 – January 4: Closed 
Closing Hall Meetings and Newsletters 

All closing hall meeting times have been posted in your hall’s closing newsletter and posted flyers. Click HERE to view the mandatory closing meetings that are taking place in the building you currently live in. Please see your RA for more information about the closing floor meeting in your hall.  Attendance is MANDATORY, so please contact your RA if you have any questions.

The updated closing newsletters will be published by November 8.  If you need to contact University Housing over the break, the housing office will be open during normal business hours from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday.  If you need assistance, please call University Police at (912) 478-5234.

Break Stay Sign-Up

Break Stay is only available to students currently living on campus for Fall 2023 and who will be living on campus for Spring 2023   The Break Stay form is submitted through the housing portal.  To access the housing portal, log into MyGeorgiaSouthern and select the On-Campus Housing link under the Campus Life tile.  Click on Housing Request Forms in the light blue ribbon and select Winter Break Stay Request Form.  Once your request has been reviewed, you will receive an email either approving or denying your break stay request.  If your request is approved, you will have full access to your room until the halls open for Spring on January 5th at noon.  If you are not approved, you must check out of the halls prior to closing on December 9th at noon.  The Break Stay request form will be turned off on December 9th.  If you need to remain on campus, please see your Resident Director or contact University Housing.  The cost of Winter Break Stay is $500.
