2020-2021 Resident Advisor Selection Process

TIMELINE:

Our Resident Advisor process begins in October and concludes in February.  Please see our timeline for 2020-2021 below:

  • October 14, 2019 – RA Application Opens
  • October 14 – November 13, 2019 – RA Information Sessions (see listing below)
  • October 17, 2019 – Auxiliary Services Job Fair
  • December 13, 2019 – RA Application Closes
  • January 17, 2020 – RA Candidate is notified of status and sent details for an interview or removed from the process
  • February 7, 2020 – RA Candidate Interview Day
  • March 9, 2020 – RA Candidates receive notification of either hired, alternate, or not hired status for 2020-2021 academic year
  • March 13, 2020 – Deadline to accept/decline RA position
  • April 3, 2020 – First Staff Meeting Orientation (Locations TBD)
  • April 17, 2020 – Human Resources On-boarding Fair

APPLICATION INFORMATION

In order for a candidate to successfully have a completed application, they must complete the three following tasks:

QUALIFICATION

After candidates have completed the application process, the Residence Education staff will review all candidate materials in order to select our best candidates to move onto our interview process. Additionally, a candidate must meet the following qualifications in order to be eligible for hire for the 2020-2021 academic year.

  • Registered as a full-time student (12 hours undergraduate; 6 hours graduate) at Georgia Southern University for Fall 2020
  • Have lived on campus at least two semesters by the start of employment at Georgia Southern University or a prior institution, been a Resident Advisor at another institution, or have had significant leadership experience/role at Georgia Southern University or a prior institution
  • A 2.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA) at the time of hire
  • A clear student conduct record before and throughout hire
  • Ability to work in a diverse environment and sensitive to students’ growth and development in the university and residence hall setting
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Successful completion of the individual and group interview process

RESIDENTIAL LEARNING COMMUNITIES

In addition to our traditional residence hall communities, we also offer candidates the option of being involved in a Residential Learning Community.  These Living-Learning Communities (LLCs) and Theme Communities (TCs) are a way for residents to live with others who have similar majors, interests, or identities.  For more information regarding each community and requirements for applicants to be considered for each community, please refer to the website below:

PREPARING FOR A SUCCESSFUL APPLICATION AND INTERVIEW

We encourage all applicants to utilize the resources of the the Office of Career and Professional Development. Applicants will be best prepared by reviewing the interviewing tips and sample questions on the website, scheduling a practice interview, and requesting an resume critique from the office. EMPLOYMENT AGREEMENT

Interested candidates are encouraged to review a copy of the Employment Agreement which details full expectations of the Resident Advisor position.  The copy below is the current Resident Advisor agreement.  The most up to date version will be provided to new Resident Advisor candidates once they have been extended offers.
